MIB-150 Manual Inspection Booth

Lighting Products and Referee Level Particle Standards for Manual Inspection Projects

The MIB-150™ is a Dual Side lighted inspection booth designed for Bench Top operation.  The Manual Inspection Booth (MIB-150™) is the latest edition of the popular MIB-50™ with updated LED lighting system.  The Standard Configuration MIB-150™ is shown in Figure below without the stainless steel armrest attachment. The MIB-150™ is designed to provide a uniform illumination work envelope and consistent inspection environment in a volume small enough to place on a table of laboratory counter top. The framework of the MIB-200™ is ergonomically designed and implements a recently patented balanced lighting system that generates a 8 Liter inspection volume in which light intensity is held within 10%, thus eliminating a major component for inspection data variability.  This large accurate inspection volume allows the inspector to easily position samples in the chamber.

The MIB-150™ implements a parallel lighting system similar to the MIB-200™ except that the lamps are oriented vertically rather than horizontally.  The uniform lighting volume is produced by high output LED lighting modules that use a folded optical path to increase the distance between light sources.  The LED lamps are actually mounted behind the Replaceable Inspection Screen (Black / White Background).  The enclosure is constructed of 14-gauge steel with a Gloss White exterior.  The Enclosure dimensions are 32.0″ (812 mm) W x 14″ (355 mm) D x 32.25″ (820 mm) H, weighting approximately 165 lbs. The MIB-150™ incorporates many of the features found in the MIB-200 but in a smaller package.  The unique Phoenix Imaging 3622 Power Supply is mounted in the upper section of the main enclosure.  The precision power supply operates at a constant voltage with variable current monitored by an active-loop feedback control to maintain precise luminous flux.  The dual channel power supply insures balanced LED module output over the entire range of control.  On the MIB-155 there is a potentiometer mounted on the front of the enclosure that allows precision adjustment of the lighting level.  In conjunction with the novel LED lamp separation adjustment the light intensity of the system can be adjusted between 2000 and 10,000 Lux in the inspection volume.  A special High Output LED lighting module set is available as an option.  The uniformity in the inspection volume is exceptional because the intensity on the White background can be matched exactly to the intensity of the Black background.  Figure 2 below illustrates the lighting path in the MIB-150™.  In addition to the electronic light intensity adjustment the MIB-150 also allows the lamps to be positioned closer or further from the centerline of the inspection zone.  Move the lamps closer to the centerline and the intensity increases, and vice versa.

The MIB-150™ Light Path is a folded mirror design that helps reduce the size of the inspection system without reducing the optical path length of the illumination sources.  This is important because the intensity changes as a function of distance from the light source.  As we move further from the LED lighting modules the change per unit of distance becomes less.  The design allows the user to easily reposition the lamps by simply sliding them toward or away from the center of the inspection volume.  In combination with the “Master Intensity Control” the MIB-150™ allows the light intensity level to be adjusted from 2000 Lux to 10,000 Lux. The inspection background can be easily removed to provide access to the two pairs of LED lighting modules for easy replacement.  The precision dual channel power supply is balanced so that the light intensity is the same in front of the White and Black regions of the background. The MIB-150 uses a PLC interfaced to a touch screen display for control of many of the unit’s functions, such as adjustment of the light intensity, timers for inspector pacing, monitoring the stability of the power supply / lighting modules, interface to audible and visual alarms and connection to footswitch.  Several operational modes can be selected from the operator interface including Indexed Inspections (user input after each step of inspection process), Continuous Inspection (user input after a complete inspection cycle), Data Collection Mode (tally inspection results or not), White / Black Inspection or Monochrome Inspection (18% Gray Card or White Background Only), and many others.  There are timers for each step of the inspection cycle that the supervisor is allow change, this is very important for consistent inspection results.
